Yamaha’s Canadian music division has confirmed that it fell victim to a recent cyberattack, as two separate ransomware groups claimed responsibility for targeting the company.

Yamaha Corporation, a renowned Japanese manufacturer of musical instruments and audio equipment, experienced unauthorized access and data theft during the cyberattack. In response, the company swiftly took action to contain the attack, working with external experts and their IT team to prevent further damage or malware infiltration into their network.

Yamaha Canada has been notifying affected individuals, and we are offering credit monitoring services to those at risk of potential harm. Additionally, we have taken decisive actions to reinforce our network defenses and ensure enhanced security measures moving forward.

Currently, the main focus for Yamaha is to “mitigate any adverse consequences stemming from this criminal act.”, explains The Record.

Was It Ransomware?

Though the company representatives did not confirm whether the incident involved ransomware, it has become a concerning cybersecurity trend where victim organizations are being targeted and claimed by multiple ransomware groups.

This year, instances of double postings have increased, with organizations being listed on multiple leak sites by different ransomware gangs, says Recorded Future ransomware researcher Allan Liska.

Experts in the field have speculated various reasons behind this trend, including affiliates working for multiple groups to gain more attention for their victims, and the possibility of cybercrime gangs operating multiple ransomware “brands” and sharing data to maximize their reach.

One of the ransomware groups involved is BlackByte, which emerged in September 2021 and has since evolved to launch several attacks, despite a previous security alert by the FBI. Another group, Akira, was first identified in March 2023 and has claimed responsibility for several high-profile incidents, showing similarities to the Conti ransomware in their operations.
