The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), the country’s technical authority for cyber security, has announced changes to its Mail Check program. The NCSC will stop providing DMARC aggregate reporting beginning March 24, 2025.

Mail Check is the NCSC’s platform for assessing email security compliance to help domain owners identify, understand and prevent abuse of their email domains.

As part of their focus on scaling Mail Check to serve more UK organisations while reducing cost and complexity, they will discontinue DMARC Aggregate Reporting, DMARC Insights with related DKIM checks, and TLS Reporting.

Organisations that have been using the NCSC Mail Check tool for these actions will need to find a new resource for these actions.

How to Prepare for the Change

As the NCSC recognizes in its announcement, DMARC Aggregate Reporting remains a cornerstone of effective email security, offering crucial insights into domain abuse attempts, email authentication success, and configuration issues. Without it, domain owners lose a vital tool for protecting their domains from phishing, spoofing, and business email compromise.

Though they are discontinuing vital features, NCSC’s Mail Check will continue to monitor email domains for the following:

  • DMARC policy, policy strength and errors
  • SPF policy, and effectiveness and errors
  • MTA-STS policy, and policy strength and errors
  • Inbound TLS (e.g. certificate validity, encryption cyphers)

The NCSC encourages organisations to transition to alternate DMARC tools to maintain visibility and control of their internet domains. Founded by a primary author of the DMARC specification, dmarcian has been helping people with their DMARC projects since day one, with an unparalleled depth of experience and best-in-class tooling.
