After parent company Suncor Energy revealed they were the target of a cyberattack, customers at Petro-Canada gas stations across Canada reported technical issues that prevented them from using credit cards or rewards points to pay.

Suncor Energy is Canada’s leading integrated energy company, providing oil sands development, production, and upgrading, offshore oil and gas, and petroleum refining in Canada and the United States. It owns the Petro-Canada retail and wholesale distribution networks. Petro-Canada operates over 1,500 gas stations across Canada.

Customers at the affected gas stations were unable to use credit card rewards points to pay. Suncor launched an investigation into the incident right away, enlisting the assistance of third-party experts, explains Security Affairs.

Suncor has experienced a cyber security incident. The company is taking measures and working with third-party experts to investigate and resolve the situation, and has notified appropriate authorities.

At this time, we are not aware of any evidence that customer, supplier or employee data has been compromised or misused as a result of this situation. While we work to resolve the incident, some transactions with customers and suppliers may be impacted.

While Suncor has yet to provide details about the attack, Petro-Canada has reported issues with the app and website for its Petro-Points loyalty program.

The situation, however, appears to be much more critical than the short notice suggests. According to Bleeping Computer, many Twitter users have complained that they have been unable to pay with credit or debit cards at Petro-Canada stations since last Friday.

Customers who purchased the “Carwash Season Pass” but were unable to use it at any of Petro-Canada’s car wash locations are also demanding refunds due to the company’s technical issues.
