MYTH #5: THE ONLY CYBERSECURITY THREAT IS EXTERNAL
You should definitely be concerned about cyberattacks from hackers outside your organization, but external threats aren’t the only dangers you should be worried about. Internal threats from employees, contractors and other people within your company are also a serious point of weakness when it comes to data security.
While it’s true that it’s rare for an employee to leak sensitive data on purpose — though it does definitely happen — most of the internal threats are actually accidental. Verizon’s Data Breach Investigations report for 2023 found that 74% of all breaches included some kind of human element, such as making errors or mistakes and falling for social engineering scams.
The best solution is to create and implement a cyber awareness program, which will help to educate employees and reduce the chances of a data breach, either unintentionally or on purpose.
