TikTok has become one of the most popular social media platforms on the net. As we have learned, the more the user base, the more that hackers will try to break in to steal sensitive information. While there might be many more mature users, the user base including younger people is increasing. These are generations that feel free to share just about everything online, and hackers see them as perfect to target.  The criminals are also aware that a majority of these users have mobile accounts as their main communication methods and online use, and have specifically targeted mobile passwords.

Cybercriminals have become quite sophisticated in their approaches for hacking. Many are in groups that include well-educated and well-funded hackers. TikTok’s popularity includes a lot of high-profile accounts and this in-turn attracts more users. Criminals have been employing what is referred to as “zero-click vulnerabilities” on the platform that allows direct messaging and then the hackers can gain control without any clicks on links that may be malicious.

Other vulnerabilities on TikTok that have been identified by researchers in security have fond that the platform can let hackers monitor user information and activities by using the method that it has on handling messages from sources that are external. Additional vulnerabilities exist with integrations and third-party apps that are connected to TikTok with user data access. Of course, cybercriminals depend on the use of phishing expeditions where they trick a user into revealing their credentials for logins or even encouraging them to click on links that are malicious.

One of the latest scams has been through the use of AI-powered software that use AI-generated videos to lure users into giving the threat actors access to their systems through the offerings of free apps or other services. It’s believed that this approach will probably continue to increase in numbers.

There are a variety of countries that have indicated their concerns regarding the potential for the government of China to access and manipulate content and user data on TikTok. Some jurisdictions have taken this seriously, including adding some restrictions.

Protecting Yourself on TikTok

  • Make use of a strong login and password that is not the same as those used on other accounts
  • Turn on two-factor authentication as an added security measure.
  • Limit the amount of personal information you include in your TikTok profile and comments.
  • Always take caution when viewing unknown links and never click on links that you aren’t familiar with.
  • Make sure your contact info is updated and set the system to send security alerts for verification of your account.

TikTok is well-aware of the vulnerabilities of their platform. While they have taken some steps to assist in meeting concerns regarding security such as storing some user data on the cloud and creating security teams dedicated to pursuing attacks, it’s always up to the user to be proactive in the protection of their own accounts.
