Connex Credit Union has informed authorities that a recent data breach impacts 172,000 individuals.
Connex is one of the largest credit unions in Connecticut. The financial organization has more than 70,000 members and over $1 billion in assets.
The Maine Attorney General’s Office has received a copy of a notification letter that is being sent out by Connex to the 172,000 individuals whose data was included in files that may have been stolen recently by hackers from the company’s systems.
According to Connex, the intrusion was detected on June 3 and an investigation showed that the attacker had access to its systems between June 2 and June 3.
The files that may have been downloaded by cybercriminals stored information such as names, account numbers, debit card information, Social Security numbers, and government IDs used to open accounts.
Connex said there was no evidence of unauthorized access to member accounts or funds.
The company’s website currently displays an alert warning customers of scam calls and text messages impersonating Connex employees in an effort to obtain PINs, passwords and account numbers. It’s unclear if the alert is related to the incident.
It’s unclear who is behind the attack on Connex and whether it was a ransomware attack. SecurityWeek has not seen any known threat group taking credit for the intrusion.
