German enterprise software maker SAP on Tuesday announced the release of 16 new security notes as part of its July 2023 Security Patch Day. In addition, updates were announced for two previously released notes.
With a ‘hot news’ priority – the highest severity level in SAP’s books – the most important of the newly released security notes resolves an OS command injection vulnerability in SAP ECC and S/4HANA (IS-OIL).
Tracked as CVE-2023-36922 (CVSS score of 9.1), the vulnerability “allows an authenticated attacker to inject an arbitrary operating system command into an unprotected parameter of a vulnerable transaction and program,” enterprise application security firm Onapsis explains.
An enterprise resource planning software, ECC (ERP Central Component) is the core component within SAP Business Suite.
Successful exploitation of the security defect could impact the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the vulnerable system.
Another ‘hot news’ security note in this month’s set of SAP patches is an update to an April 2018 note that brings the latest version of Chromium to SAP Business Client.
Marked with a CVSS score of 10 (out of 10), the security note fixes 56 bugs, including two critical-severity and 35 high-severity flaws, Onapsis notes.
SAP released seven high-priority security notes this week, one of which is an update to a note released in June 2023, which deals with a cross-site scripting (XSS) issue in UI5 (Variant Management).
The other six high-priority notes address a request smuggling and request concatenation issue and a memory corruption bug in Web Dispatcher, a denial-of-service (DoS) vulnerability in SQL Anywhere, and an unauthenticated blind SSRF flaw and a header injection issue in Solution Manager (Diagnostics agent).
The remaining nine security notes that SAP released this week resolve medium-severity vulnerabilities in NetWeaver Process Integration, S/4HANA, Enable Now, NetWeaver AS ABAP and ABAP Platform, BusinessObjects, NetWeaver AS for Java, ERP Defense Forces and Public Security, and Business Warehouse and BW/4HANA.
While there is no mention of any of these flaws being exploited in the wild, organizations are advised to apply the available patches as soon as possible. Known vulnerabilities in enterprise products represent an attractive target for threat actors.
