The National Security Agency (NSA) has unveiled its ‘2023 Cybersecurity Year in Review’. This document highlights the agency’s achievements in enhancing national security through cybersecurity.

It emphasizes the value of NSA’s collaborations with U.S. government agencies, international allies, and the Defense Industrial Base, underlining the collective effort in facing sophisticated cybersecurity threats.

Key initiatives and threat response

A notable achievement in the report is the establishment of the AI Security Center, a significant step in strengthening cybersecurity infrastructure.

The NSA has played a key role in identifying and countering covert cyber intrusions by the People’s Republic of China into U.S. infrastructure, in coordination with agencies like CISA, FBI, and NIST.

The report also discusses the NSA’s work in updating cryptography techniques to meet modern challenges, including the threat posed by quantum computing.

The global landscape becomes ever more complex as the technology we use in cyberspace continues to advance. One such example is Artificial Intelligence (AI), which has the capacity to upend multiple sectors of society simultaneously.

We must stay ahead of our global competitors in the race to understand and harness its potential, as well as protect ourselves from adversarial use. At NSA, we are uniquely positioned to do so by coalescing our deep technical expertise, threat insights, and authorities to support these efforts.

Strategic developments and enhancements

In 2023, the NSA made several significant strides:

  • The launch of the AI Security Center within the Cybersecurity Collaboration Center aims to securely integrate AI in National Security Systems and the Defense Industrial Base.
  • As a team effort between the US and other countries, the NSA has increased its cyber defenses against global threats such as Russian cyberespionage malware and malicious cyber activity from the People’s Republic of China.
  • A 400% increase in enrollments in the NSA’s free cybersecurity services for Department of Defense contractors has significantly improved the Defense Industrial Base’s security.
