PURPOSE
This Media disposal policy from TechRepublic Premium provides specific instructions for ensuring organization data is properly protected when disposing of old storage media.

POLICY DETAILS
When disposing of damaged, unusable, obsolete, off-lease, decommissioned, old, or end-of-service-life equipment and media, the organization requires that the guidelines outlined herein be followed:
- Hard drives, SANs and NAS devices must be sanitized using a low-level format compatible with the U.S. Department of Defense data erasure standard (DoD 5220.22-M).
- Portable USB drives (flash media) must be destroyed.
- Backup media must be destroyed.
- CD and DVD media must be destroyed.
