Why AI Adoption Stalls: Data, Talent and Strategy Gaps

More than 93% of organizations say artificial intelligence will be a permanent part of their business strategies in the future but only 30% believe their current adoption levels give them a competitive edge. This gap stems from data, talent and operational challenges, said Brett Barton, vice president and global AI practice leader at Unisys.

Clean, governed and accessible data remains vital for effective AI applications, yet many companies still grapple with data quality and infrastructure. This can act as an impediment. Combined with larger companies dominating the talent pool, smaller organizations especially struggle to adopt AI effectively.

“A lot of organizations fail to realize that whether it is traditional AI or generative AI, these are not discrete projects. These are programs and they don’t have an end,” he said. “They’re very similar to a child … (they) require consistent updating of data sources, ensuring and measuring data quality. As business processes change, the organization has a responsibility, ultimately, to change the data.”

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group, Barton also discussed:

  • Strategies for balancing rapid AI adoption with robust planning;
  • How organizations can choose between buying and building AI solutions;
  • Tailored strategies for mid-sized firms with limited budgets and resources.

Barton has more than 20 years of experience across industries, including manufacturing, financial services, healthcare and logistics. He is responsible for the identification and adoption of innovative technologies in AI/ML and deep learning to drive business value for Unisys’ clients and their customers.
